It is symptomatic of the constricting specialism and the oppressive burden of fact of our time that it has been left to the imagination of a novelist, Marguerite Yourcenar, to create the broadest, the most balanced and in many ways the most authentic interpretation of the affair.

Brother, if you white men murdered the son of the Great Spirit, we Indians had nothing to do with it. It is none of our affair. If he had come among us we would not have killed him. We would have treated him well. You must make amends for that crime yourself. Brother, we do not wish to destroy your religion or take it from you. We only want to enjoy our own.

I do not serve the same God, but I serve Him more loyally and with a purer heart. Yours is the God of men, the king, the founder and the upholder of your race; mine is the God of the universe, the creator, the preserver and the hope of all creatures.

But I am deceiving myself in talking about a Christian republic; these terms are mutually exclusive. Christianity preaches only servitude and dependence. Its spirit is too favorable to tyranny for tyranny not to take advantage of it at all times. True Christians are made to be slaves. They know it and are hardly moved by this. This brief life has too little value in their eyes.

He had been there long enough to have treated most of their fathers and mothers, many grandfathers and grandmothers too, and recognise ailments that were like artefacts passed down the family, inarguable proofs of the theory that since human beings first stood upright, nothing was ever really cured.

What troubles me most is when religion seeks to dictate social functioning through the authority of its scriptures. The obvious question then arises: Who authored those scriptures?

As I reflect on the caste system today, I realize that while laws may change, the deeper transformation must occur in the human mind. The sense of hierarchy, of being superior or inferior by birth, cannot be erased merely through legal frameworks. It must dissolve through education, compassion, and spiritual awakening.

Why, how, did my mother start making her birds? I don't know; I never asked. I suppose it was like growing up with a mother who goes to church on Sundays or gets her hair done every two weeks. Why? How? But the child whose mother goes to church on Sundays does not ask those questions, because to that child, it is a perfectly normal thing to do, to go sit on hard benches in a roomful of people discussing the specifics of a fairy tale (yes, I've shown my hand here, I suppose, but sooner or later you and I will have to have this discussion) and then having cookies and coffee afterward and chatting about the weather.

For the Neverland is always more or less an island, with astonishing splashes of colour here and there, and coral reefs and rakish-looking craft in the offing, and savages and lonely lairs. It would be an easy map if that were all; but there is also first day at school, religion, fathers, the round pond, needlework, murders, hangings, verbs that take the dative... and either these are part of the island, or they are another map showing through, and it is all rather confusing, especially as nothing will stand still.

Lukewarm Christians are those who claim to follow Christ but lack passion, commitment, and genuine devotion. They often prioritize worldly comforts and desires over spiritual growth and obedience to God. The Bible warns against lukewarmness, emphasizing the importance of wholehearted devotion and fervent love for God. Lukewarm Christians risk being rejected by God and missing out on His best, as warned in Revelation 3:16. By seeking a deeper relationship with God and prioritizing their faith, believers can move from lukewarmness to a vibrant, life-changing walk with Christ.

Religion failed not because it offered hope, but because it often placed that hope entirely beyond the human realm, thus diverting our collective will from the urgent, terrestrial task of building a just and compassionate world right here, right now.
